Butler Library, is of course, the quintessential image featured on every other postcard sold at the bookstore but there are other, equally picturesque places to study on campus and your Columbia Student ID card is a veritable passport to each and everyone of these locations. See below for a list of my personal favorites.   Avery Library at the School of Architecture: Avery Library is by far one of my favorite places to study on campus. As soon as you walk in you are greeted with large windows and plenty of sunlight. Although finals and midterms season makes this a popular location, there are generally plenty of seats available throughout the semester. Unfortunately, you are only able to print with Paw Print, which means you are limited to a $2.00 quota per day, but this is usually the case for printing anywhere outside of SIPA. Plus, Avery is located above Brownies Cafe, so you can easily grab lunch. Science and Engineering Library: The Science and Engineering Library is another great location to study. The upstairs area is located right next to large windows overlooking the Engineering School, with views of the Business school as well. There are always plenty of seats and computers available. Plus, it is conveniently located next to one of the best cafes on campus Joes Coffee.  Mathematics Library: located in the Mathematics building, this library is small and generally isolated. Although the library itself may be a little quieter and smaller than the other items on this list, it has some really great views of Broadway and Barnard College. The views alone make it worth the trip from SIPA. Gabe M. Weiner Music and Arts Library: this library is located above Dodge Hall and also has some great views of Columbia University. Additionally, due to its location, you will generally find it emptier than other libraries on campus. Although a little further out of the way than other items on this list, it is one of the quieter places to study, it also doesnt get as packed during finals and midterms like other libraries generally do. Carlos: Well, My name is Carlos Guzman. I was born in Guatemala and I came to the United States at the age of 9. I have lived in Los Angeles ever since. I went to UCLA and received my BS in Biochemistry in 2008. I typically like reading stuff that is completely out of left field, such as Tricks of the Mind or Confessions of a Conjuror by Derren Brown. I tend to read books that have little structure or scientific content to balance out the medical texts I have to go through. Its is nice to get your mind working in a completely different gear. Carlos: I love the fact that it balances multiple important facets of scholarship, including research and didactic rigor, with a healthy environment which allows us to grow in multiple ways, including the arts. For example, I played guitar in a small band with a few of my classmates, while others undertook photography, poetry, and travel. I really like the program, and doubt that I would change anything. It is a place where learning is encouraged and self motivation is expected. I love that. Carlos: I really wish somebody would have told me how fast paced everything is! I understand that nobody is ever really prepared for the first year of medical school, but if I could go back, I would tell myself to brush up on my human biology and basic anatomy. I would have also looked into getting a job as a clinical scribe. Scribes learn how to write medical notes, which is one of the most tedious parts of medical school education, and one of the most useful skills to master. Accepted: Did you go straight from college to med school? If not, what did you do in between? Carlos: I did not. My path was a bit odd, as I did not get accepted after my first application. Seeing as teaching and writing are both facets of my future career that I look forward to, I decided to get my feet wet as soon as possible. This became not only a truly amazing learning experience, but also a way to overcome one of my remaining fears, namely business. I quickly became aware of my abilities as a leader and learned how to maximize my time and effort. I learned tidbits about what running a business is about, and I learned that there are many students out there who, like me, are eager to work, write, and help others. We are currently making big moves regarding publishing study materials for medical school testing. One of the next big steps would be writing study materials for the new format MCAT. I have learned to love the long term goals that come inherent to the world of business, and intend to make it a permanent part of my career as well. Accepted: How do you juggle work and school? Carlos: I think one of the key skills learned in medical school is time management. Once you start looking around, you will notice that there are a million little things throughout the day that just kill your work and productivity. Things like TV and Facebook are huge time suckers. I told myself, If I did anything as often as people check their friends status or watched TV, Id be a millionaire! So I started doing that. Instead of watching too much TV, I look up topics to write about or work on research. Instead of getting on Facebook, I fire off business emails or get some shadowing scheduled in! I read interesting topics while walking to and fro from places like the parking lot to the hospital or cafeteria. Sitting at red lights is also a huge waste of time: Why not practice surgical knots on your steering wheel while you wait? Look for the time wasters and get rid of them! Accepted: What are your top 3 med school admissions tips? Carlos:  1) Be strong all around, meaning your life outside of medicine as well. Study hard to keep your grades up, sure, but love the rest of your life as well! Play an instrument? Show that you are passionate by playing shows or teaching others how to play! Like sports? Be a leader or coach little league! Dont be the student who doesnt care about anything other than school. Life balance is key! Remember that being a healthy, normal human being is one of the most important things in life! 2) Get into research ASAP. An applicant with some research experience will always shine! Even if you dont get a publication, being able to talk about your research and the current literature intelligently will show the committee that you are ready to take into account one of the main facets of present day medicine: evidence based approaches to health. 3) Make sure that if you have any weak points in your application that kept you from getting accepted, you get them resolved in very tangible and obvious ways. Is your GPA weak? RETAKE that class that hurt you and SMASH it (happened to me!). Is your MCAT weak? Retake it and show them that you are great! DO NOT just assume that not getting accepted means that you have to change your career path. It just means you have to persevere! Accepted: Did you have any shadowing experiences or work on any research projects before you applied to medical school? Carlos: I was fortunate (and aggressive) enough to get both shadowing in clinics as well as research during the end of my high school years and throughout college. The opportunities are out there, and you have to be aggressive to get them! Dont be afraid to ask, the worst thing that will happen is that they will say no. At that point you can move on and look elsewhere. Keep looking and youll eventually find something! Constance Gist, a mother of three has lived a long and interesting life filled with a lot of love and happiness. Born February 18, 1917 in Berlin Wisconsin, she was raised on a 360 acre farm as the third oldest of a total of nine kids. As most would think growing up on a farm would be like, it is, and one would have to work every day planting, growing/maintaining crops, and picking them. Connie along with her brothers, sisters, and cousins, who lived up the street on the next farm over, would have to do all of these jobs learning from their parents. Her cousins who lived up the street were also a group of nine children, so at anyone point when they would all hang out and play, there would be at least eighteen kids playing around the farms and in the street. Unlike here in Southern California, Wisconsin actually experienced beautiful season changes. There would be beautiful summers and cold winters with white Christmases, there would be snow storms giving plenty of snow to tie up a sl eigh to a horse and ride around in the sleigh she said when asked about some of her favorite things about Berlin. Luckily for Connie and her family during the Great Depression they did not feel too much of the Great Depression because they lived on farms and had no need to worry about how they would feed themselves. The main themes are expressed through Scout’s point of view and the reader sees how her youth and naiveness reflects how she sees the world around her. Scout Finch a young girl and the daughter of the lawyer defending Tim Robinson, an african-american who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Prejudice is used through various characters and themes which reflects the town Maycomb during this time. Initially, Scout was unable to see this. When I heard that I needed some 5 hours of community service hours for my AAA class, I was disappointed for a while. I thought that I would need to go one some special mission there and back again,... or something like that. I was glad when I leaned that any community service hours that you had performed that summer counted towards the 5 hour goal, and just this summer I had volunteered at the Colorado State Fair Lost Child Center. The Co. State Fair Lost Child Center is generally operated by my Civil Air Patrol Crew CO-RMR-179, also known as the Pueblo Eagles. This year my squadron became a venturing crew too, (Venturing is a branch of Boy Scouts) because this year we decided to perform the Lost Child Center as a Venturing crew, and†¦show more content†¦Some of the skills I was able to develop and items I was able to learn during my time at the Colorado State Fair lost Child Center are as follows: General Communication, our crew needed to be able to communicate with each ot her quickly and effectively in order to find the lost person. Radio Communication, we were not able to be within yelling distance the whole time, so we needed to understand how to use radios effectively. Calming People Down, some of the parents, and/or children that came to us when their child/sibling got lost would be agitated, and we would need to calm them down. Persons Recognition, our crew had to be able to recognize people from descriptions, sometimes limited to the person’s age and hair color. Maps Understanding and Navigation, although not always, but sometimes the people would tell us where they last saw said lost person, and we would need to the location, and canvas that area before the person got too far. Lots, and lots of running and walking, to find lost persons we would need to be actively walking through the State Fair, and need to run to the said position before the person got too far, although we did get occasional breaks. I believe that the Colorado State F air Lost Child Center helped me to learn, and develop skills that would otherwise go unlearned. Because of their gender, women have to work twice as hard to establish themself in society, but still are at risk to be perceived differently. For example, when a woman has a high class position in a company, people often have the notion that she used her sexual position to climb to power. With their clothing they walk around in, they are often judged by their figure than their ability to fulfill their job requirements. The story Judith would be a great example of how females use their body parts to gain respect. By building up her description as a maiden, the poet uses Judith’s virginity to construct her innocence, making her appear vulnerable. Because of this trait, Holofernes thought it would be easy to grasp her attention and take ownership of her life. Females are always worried about their appearance: using make-up and other products to appear younger. Men see age marks as ugliness, and in order for women to appear more attractive in their eyes, they feel they must hide these facial marks. In Beowulf, Grendel’s mother was described as gross-looking and hideous, but she wanted to get revenge for her son, just like any other mother. Maintaining and preserving peace was not only their job, it was their identity. When Grendel’s mother was killed, she had failed in her social role as peace-keeper. No one expected her to be beautiful because women were not appreciated in that aspect. When men get older, they are viewed as more attractive, where as if a woman does, her beauty fades off, and she is forced to intrigue a guy with her intelligence. Commercials from companies like Cover Girl, where they are promoting beauty products with famous people such as Gabrielle Union, Queen Latifah, and Halle Berry, encourage women others that they can be beautiful, no matter how old they are. There are movies that display men’s dominance over women such as Disney’s â€Å"Aladdin, Beauty of the Beast, and Beowulf. They show unrealistic, curvaceous, and vulnerable women who depend on male figures for strength and survival, not their own empowerment. In Aladdin, Princess Jasmine is upset and desperate to find a prince to make her feel loved and protected. Along comes Prince Aladdin that captures her attention, saving her from the clutches of Jafar, the Sultan’s chief advisor. The movie has this â€Å"male-saving-the-day† theme to show that a woman is nothing without a man by her side. In Beauty and the Beast, it is portrayed that a woman cannot feel safe and protected unless they have someone with the character traits of the Beast: aggressive, violent, and intimidating. On April 3, 2009, an article was written in Kellevision called â€Å"Beauty and the Beast in Television†, stated that women who want this type of relationship usually had abusive fathers growing up, and want to feel protected from their father. Her waist is small, she is constantly wearing short skirts, and she has a love for shopping. In that cartoon, Mr. Jetson is the one going to work, while she spends his hard-earned money. In Chaucer’s â€Å"Wife of Bath†, the woman had multiple husbands, and she used them all for money. For young girls that dream to have a great career and a loving family, this is not the message that they need to hear. Why is it that men can get a position of power because of their gender without sacrifices, but women have to do so much to receive respect? In today’s society, women are not given the proper respect that they deserve. They are constantly perceived as weak, and always judged by their appearance, not their mind. Wife of Bath is only judged by her beauty, and when it comes to something that requires dominance, the man is always required to handle the situation. People have to realize that women should not be mistreated before you actually take time to learn about them. Even though men are still perceived as the dominant sex, women are starting to gain respect in our society.
